| 9 reasons to look forward to baseball season
Any way Jim Leyland decides to go — and knowing him, he will go in many different directions — this is a potential 950-run monster. Here is one possible combination: Curtis Granderson, Placido Polanco, Miguel Cabrera, Magglio Ordonez, Gary Sheffield, Carlos Guillen, Jacque Jones, Edgar Renteria, Ivan Rodriguez. In 2007, that grouping included five hitters at .296 or better, three at .320 or better, five 20-plus home-run hitters, three 100-plus RBI men and the rare 20-20-20-20 accomplishment. With this group in place and healthy, there's little reason to worry about Dontrelle Willis' adjustment to the American League. 5. The National League West race. Good luck winning it, as the division that gave us the 2007 NLCS matchup is poised once again. The Dodgers have added Joe Torre, Andruw Jones and Hiroki Kuroda in hopes of erasing the memory of their late-September meltdown.
Transformers (Two-Disc Special Edition)
"From director Michael Bay and executive producer Steven Spielberg comes a thrilling battle between the Autobots and the Decepticons. When their epic struggle comes to Earth, all that stands between the evil Decepticons and ultimate power is a clue held by Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf)." "Transformers (Two-Disc Special Edition)" is rated PG-13. The Movie: I've been a fan of Transformers as long as they've been around. I bought the original G1 toys. I read all the Marvel Comics. I watched the cartoons. I saw the animated movie. I bought the soundtrack. I have "The Touch." So it was with a mixture of eager anticipation and dread that I awaited the live action "Transformers" movie. I was glad to hear that Steven Spielberg was involved, but I was a bit worried about Michael Bay's storytelling abilities.
'Greatest Of All Time' Calling It A Day
He's an icon in this business," says Johnson. “Nowadays the word icon is thrown around like an egg-white omelet is thrown around. But he definitely is an icon." “When you're comparing someone to the best, you're comparing him to Ric Flair. Ric Flair is the best," agrees TNA champion Kurt Angle. “A lot of people say Kurt Angle is comparable to Ric Flair, but you can't compare yourself to Ric Flair. He's amazing." Flair's 2004 autobiography, “To Be The Man," afforded other stars from this generation an opportunity to give props to a performer they had idolized for years. “In my life, I bow down to only one person, and that's Jesus Christ. But in my professional life, I wanted Ric to know, he is the man," wrote Shawn Michaels, who will be Flair's opponent in what is expected to be his last match at Wrestlemania 24 in Orlando.
College Hoops 2K8 PlayStation 3 Giveaway
EA may be the marketing king when it comes to sports video games, but in terms of overall quality, 2K Sports' series of 2K games not only holds a candle to EA's titles, but in some cases outdoes them. The College Hoops 2K series is one such instance, as the series has continually been the top-selling college basketball game and generally has the higher review scores to go along with its sales. This year, Greg Oden of the Portland Trailblazers is College Hoops 2K8's cover boy, and although Oden may be out with a knee injury, the game itself is off and running like a thoroughbred horse. We're sure college hoops fans are curious to get their hands on this iteration for themselves, which is why we're hosting this contest for one free copy of College Hoops 2K8 for the PlayStation 3. That's right: a next-gen game to make sure all those next-gen holiday gifts get put to good use.

McCain’s life experiences will suit road ahead
A man who survives torture and five years in a prisoner of war camp most assuredly has the constitution to withstand determined opposition. That opposition comes from unrelenting critics on the left — and from an impatient citizenry grown unaccustomed to the steadfastness required to defeat an often abstract enemy. We are a nation of rationalizers, skeptics and negotiators best defined by Rodney King: "People, I just want to say, you know, can we all get along?" We should live in terror that the U.S. president sitting across the bargaining table from Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, or committing to Israel's security, or confronting the ambitions of Hugo Chavez, is animated by Pollyannish notions that words and good intentions can substitute for power and resolve. We can't get along if you want to kill us — and we can't co-exist if the desire translates into deeds.
Looking back at EliteXC's debut event
At first glance, the mixed martial arts (MMA) action Feb. 10 at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven, Miss., seemed similar to what fans have grown accustomed to over the last few years. The fights were held in a venue near a strip of casinos. The combatants fought in a cage. Brandon Vera and the City Boxing crew were spotted at the fighters' hotel and the arena. Quinton Jackson was seen walking through press row, chatting it up, choice beverage in hand. VIPs dotted the arena, including former Tennessee Titans running back Eddie George and TV talk-show host Jimmy Kimmel. Veteran referees Herb Dean and Steve Mazzagatti officiated the main events. And the night ended with a controversial Herb Dean-refereed match involving a Shamrock. But a second glance revealed some differences -- subtle and not-so-subtle compared to what some MMA fans have gotten used to from a steady diet of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in recent years.
Madonna Headlines List of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees
The ever-evolving Madonna was announced as a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee on Thursday along with John Mellencamp, The Ventures, Leonard Cohen and The Dave Clark Five. A panel of 600 industry figures selected the five acts to be inducted at the annual ceremony, to be held March 10 in New York. "The 2008 inductees are trailblazers -- all unique and influential in their genres," Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation President and CEO Joel Peresman said in a statement. "From poetry to pop, these five acts demonstrate the rich diversity of rock and roll itself." To be eligible, artists must have issued a first single or album at least 25 years before nomination. Madonna Louise Ciccone signed with Sire Records in 1982 and became one of MTV's first stars two years later with "Like A Virgin." She has constantly altered her image and appearance ever since, showing staying power that few '80s stars could muster.
Police and Tasers: Hooked on Shock
The past couple of weeks have been rocky on the stock market, but one company that hasn't been suffering too much is Taser International. At the end of January, its stock jumped by an impressive 8 per cent, and it's even higher today. Matthew McKay, a stock analyst at Jeffries & Co. in San Francisco, cites a simple cause: news that the Toronto Police Services Board plans to buy 3,000 new Taser electroshock weapons, at a cost of $8.6 million for gear and training. If the deal goes ahead, tasers would become standard issue weaponry for all of Toronto's frontline officers, right next to their handcuffs and batons. On Wednesday night, I participated in a public forum about the prospect of a fully taser-armed police force, organized by the Toronto Police Accountability Coalition.
