I don't really consider myself a "guest blogger" in this case, more of a caretaker, really, making sure the plants are watered and the fish are fed. I offered to help keep things at a slow idle when I saw that DFO was coming back to the blog multiple times a day while he was supposed to be on vacation. Nevertheless, this article is a very timely piece of perspective considering some of the problems we've had this week.

Fortunately, this group has been, for the most part, very understanding and supportive in Dave's absence. According to the story, though, not all bloggers are quite so fortunate. Romenesko hasn't had a vacation in 7 years. That just ain't right.

UPDATE: Missing hiker from Chino is found dead near Mt. Baldy

MT. BALDY - A local man missing since Wednesday in the mountains above Claremont has been found dead.

Robert Bruner, 46, of Chino was found by two local hikers around 2 p.m. Sunday, according to a San Bernardino County Sheriff's news release.

The two hikers went to the sheriff's command post in the area and informed authorities they found a dead man while hiking west of Falling Rock Canyon. That area has an elevation of 6,000 feet, according to the news release.

Search teams responded and later notified the coroner's office. Coroner's officials confirmed the body as belonging to Bruner around 5 p.m.

"It appears that he did fall. He was wearing his climbing gear," said Cindy Beavers, sheriff's spokeswoman.

Volunteers from San Bernardino, Los Angeles and San Diego Counties assisted in the search for Bruner, according to the news release.

Ramon Vazquez's top five clubhouses to visit

Rangers infielder Ramon Vazquez has made his rounds in the major leagues, starting his career with Seattle before also playing for San Diego, Boston and Cleveland before landing with the Rangers last year. In his career, Vazquez has seen just about every clubhouse in the league. Here are his top five:

1. Seattle: "It's a big clubhouse that's comfortable. The food is great and the guys take care of you."

2. Milwaukee: "The clubhouse is huge and it's really comfortable. It also has good food."

3. Arizona: "Again, it's big. The cages are right next to the clubhouse."

4. Houston: "It's comfortable; the food is pretty decent. The cage is right next to the clubhouse so you don't have to run around."

5. St. Louis: "The new park has a nice clubhouse.

Through the Wire Martin's Witness Mismanagement

Bitter Smith, a Republican, has been active in politics outside her job representing the cable industry, having served as a Scottsdale city councilwoman. She also ran for Congress in 2000.

"We don't need any more rehashed talking points from Washington, D.C. " we need action points," Bitter Smith said in the statement announcing her exploration. "The challenges facing the 5th District require action, and leadership."

There are already five Republican contenders in the district race, local reports say, so Bitter Smith would have her work cut out for her.

But in an election year where candidates are touting their ability to bring people together, she can cite one such accomplishment: in her tenure, the Arizona and New Mexico cable associations merged.

UK takes tough stance on piracy

This legislation would mean the UK would have the most stringent and prohibitive anti-piracy laws in the world.

It would be a technical challenge for ISPs to do this. Monitoring traffic that is shared using file-sharing tools like BitTorrent is perfectly feasible - as the programs use specific internet ports. In fact, ISPs already monitor file-sharing traffic across the net in order to shape the flow of information - prioritising certain bits of data over others.

Knowing where to look isn't the problem; knowing what to look for is. Every day many terabytes of data are being shared over the internet using file-sharing tools. Individual packets of information can be inspected - but who can tell if Person A is sharing an MP3 file of his own band performing with Person B or if it's the latest Kylie track?

Would all digital content have to be watermarked? Would ISPs have responsibility for this? If not, who would?

And there is evidence that more people are encrypting files that they send over peer to peer networks, making it difficult to know exactly what they are sharing.

Board sets $378 million school-bond vote June 3

Palo Alto schools will be getting bigger and better, school board members said Tuesday as they unanimously approved putting a $378 million bond measure on the June 3 ballot.

The bond measure would extend to 2042 the current property tax of $44.50 per $100,000 assessed valuation established under a 1995 bond measure.

That means a continuation of about $445 in yearly taxes for a home assessed at $1 million.

The bond measure requires 55 percent voter approval under state Proposition 39, which also requires the formation of a citizens' oversight committee.

The bond measure would expand and improve crowded, run-down schools, school officials said, echoing concerns presented at meetings in the months leading up to the final Tuesday vote.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

CONSUMER ADVICE PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Since the mid-1990s, there has been a noticeable improvement in Greece's public transportation systems, including the ferry networks serving the islands. Bus and trolley routes are now served by new fleets, while a new mass transit system in Athens - the metro - has helped relieve congestion in the capital's centre.

The 2004 Olympics provided the impetus for improvements in public transport, which include the reintroduction of the tram as a link between the southern coastal suburbs and downtown Athens.

Tram

The tram has three lines: from Neos Kosmos (metro station) to Hellenic Olympic Complex (Agios Kosmas) and from Glyfada to the Peace and Friendship Stadium (alongside the Faliro Sports Complex). The third line runs from Syntagma to Glyfada.

Instant image preview

If you move your mouse over MilkyWay's image window, a small toolbar appears offering several options: You can close the window; zoom to fullscreen mode (double-clicking the window also accomplishes this); rotate the image; create a thumbnail for its Finder icon; or move the image file to the Trash. (Unfortunately, these buttons don't use tooltips to explain what they do; some are obvious, but others you simply have to learn by reading MilkyWay's documentation.) More options are hidden in the window's contextual menu: Right/control-click on the image preview and you can set the image as your Desktop picture or open it in its default application.
