Tulo lands a big deal

Troy Tulowitzki isn't a shortstop. He's a pixie dust-speckled short story.

Seventeen months ago he wore topsiders and jeans on his first big-league road trip. Eleven months ago he arrived at spring training without a starting job. But on Wednesday, about the same time a kid his age might be grabbing lunch on campus, Tulowitzki talked about his six-year, $31 million contract with the Rockies that includes a seventh-year club option in 2014 for $15 million.

He looked like he had fallen off the cover of GQ, dressed in a black suit with a purple-tinted tie.

"I have a lot of nice clothes now," Tulowitzki, 23, told The Denver Post before heading to dinner with his teammates Wednesday night.

The evolution of Tulowitzki has been .

Popular bar closing doors

We hope to acquire that land sometime in the near future," Ball said. "If we do acquire it, we would plant some trees and grass and shrubs. There could possibly be other uses later, but initially our plans would include landscaping."Long, who also owns Huddle House restaurants in Greenwood, Saluda, McCormick and Seneca, said the time was right to sell his sports bar."Greenwood has changed," Long said. "There's no telling how many restaurants have opened since we opened. With the office burning down next door and us clearing that lot, it seemed like the right time. A businessman in town made us an offer, and he has an agreement with Lander."We couldn't come up with a price with Lander. Then (the businessman) came in and made a good offer on both pieces of property."Long said it has been a strenuous and sad time as he prepares to close the business.

On Books: The many benefits of "Eat, Pray, Love"

There she dipped her toes back into the life of flirting and dating, and fell head over heels in love with a handsome older man, a Brazilian named Felipe, whom she eventually married.

In the hands of a less able writer, this book would have been just too New Age for most readers, yet it has spent more than a year on the New York Times best-seller list. I loved it.

Ms. Gilbert is writing a sequel, and in the meantime you can go to her Web site, www.elizabethgilbert.com, and see pictures of many of the people she met while on her pilgrimage: her Italian friends Luca Spaghetti and the conversational partner twins, Giovanni and Dario; Richard from Texas, her unlikely friend at the ashram, who nicknamed her “Groceries"; and the native healers in Bali, Ketut and Wayan, and Wayan's daughter Tutti, among others.

Cerys: We were different animals outside jungle

HEARTBROKEN Cerys Matthews has revealed exactly why her "perfect" romance with celebrity jungle lover Marc Bannerman dramatically hit the skids.

Talking exclusively to the News of the World singer Cerys told how she sensationally dumped the former EastEnders star just before Valentine's Day after realising they were a total MISMATCH.

She said: "I fell for Marc and loved being with him...but we were very different in many ways. It had to end."

In fact the whirlwind fling that began so magically in front of millions of TV viewers on I'm a Celebrity was wrecked by a catalogue of differences:

HE loves his cool showbiz life in a trendy part of london, SHE'S a mum-of-two village girl in Wales.

HE'S a protective macho man who takes charge on dates and orders everything, SHE'S a fiercely independent spirit who insists on making her own decisions.

Marine life in peril

There are effects on thyroid and sex hormones from PBDEs. That's more or less what we know about them," said Wilfried Karmaus, a University of South Carolina epidemiology professor who studied the compounds in Michigan. "PBDEs are banned in Europe but not in the United States. The problem is, we do not have any human data about these substances in South Carolina."

Studying the contaminants gets very complex very quickly because there's a mix of them in the body, said Pat Fair, Living Marine Resources Branch Chief at the NOAA lab, one of the researchers.

"But (research) is more important because there's a mixture. We all have a combination of contaminants that we're exposed to and are carrying around with us. They each have their own toxicity; but in combination, the toxicities may be enhanced.

Brady carries coaches on back

Now it's Thomas Dimitroff's turn to join those who should blow kisses toward the primary reason they've become highly favored in the NFL.

Tom Brady.

"Quarterbacks probably have made everybody in this league successful," Ken Herock said Thursday. He served as an accomplished NFL general manager for more than three decades after drafting the likes of Steve Young, Doug Williams and Brett Favre.

Added Herock, who still lives in the Atlanta area after his stint with the Falcons: "Your whole franchise's success is based on the quarterback. Even when I was back with the Raiders [in the 1970s], we had Ken Stabler. I went on to other places. So did Ron Wolf [another noted GM]. The coaches went on. It just happens when you have a great quarterback."

Yeah, but never like this.

In the new age of open social networks, Six Apart is doing its part to create a hub that embraces the world of feeds outside its own servers. The company is shipping Action Streams, a free plug-in for Movable Type 4.1 that lets users aggregate, control, and share their Web activities from 75 applications, such as FaceBook, Twitter and Vox.

Six Apart prides itself on giving its users more control over their profile, such as showing or hiding individual actions,, that other services (remember Facebook Beacon). "We are starting a new wave of open technology with a Facebook style news feed," Anil Dash, vice president at Six Apart told me. "The implementation of open source and decentralized controls provides a way to leverage open standards and connections around a news feed.

'We do have a strong voice'

Many Republicans, though, refuse to support any tax increase, and some don't want to use cigarette tax revenue for recurring expenses because it's a declining revenue source.

The summit attendees also will try to combat what many view as deceptive language used by voucher proponents who advance the idea of using tax dollars toward private school tuition as school choice, Brawley said. Voucher or tax credit opponents say that sort of school choice would damage public schools and stretch already limited resources too far.

The leadership summit was designed to help the women network, disseminate information, share ideas and unite to confront struggles within their communities, Brawley said. The summit will have lasting influence because the women will get behind the issues and mobilize their communities, therefore leveraging their influence as they push for change, she said.

Stars are fashionable - and safe - on red carpet

The best word to describe the red-carpet fashion at the Academy Awards: red.Katherine Heigl, Helen Mirren, Miley Cyrus, Ruby Dee, Anne Hathaway and Heidi Klum were among the stars in red gowns Sunday night at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles. Shades of plum were worn by Cate Blanchett and Jessica Alba. .

Say It Ain’t So, Ralph!

I had mixed feelings when some friends of mine pointed out that Ralph Nader had mentioned me as an "independent military analyst" in his Sunday appearance on NBC's Meet the Press. In responding to a question from Tim Russert about why he was running yet again, he cited a recent article of mine about how Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have not only ignored the Pentagon's record spending spree, but have adopted policies that may well involve increasing the military budget.

My point was that we need to get the Democratic frontrunners to address this issue in some fashion before they take office in 2009 (assuming a Democrat wins, which is not guaranteed by any means). It was NOT meant to suggest that we need a third party candidate in the race — although obviously Ralph Nader is free to use the information as he sees fit.
