Politicians’ actions in face of sagging economy is hard to explain

O'Neal's sun setting in West

My son couldn't get into the game with seven shots," he would say.

But he's averaging 8.7 points and 11 rebounds a game in Phoenix. That's Brendan Haywood. That's the O'Neal of '07 and '08, not the O'Neal of '05, when he and now-teammate Steve Nash were the yin and yang of the league's Most Valuable Player discussion.

He can be that O'Neal now and then, if the universes align and his body doesn't bark too loudly. He did it once for the Heat this season, in November against Houston's Yao Ming, scoring 26 points with 14 rebounds, three blocks and just two fouls.

But that's the exception. The truth is he turns 36 next week, and he looks every day of it. It's not just the scoring. He has five total assists, so it's not like his presence immediately opened up chances for the Suns' shooters (the equal point when you study that roster: what shooters?).

LAST night after her uncontested "victory" in Florida, Hillary Clinton was introduced by... Alcee Hastings, removed from by the Senate in 1998 after impeachment from* in the House, under a heavy cloud of suspicion of bribery when he was a federal judge. (A bit of the colourful background here.) Bill Clinton pardoned Mr Hastings' alleged co-conspirator on his last day in office.

Doesn't Ms Clinton have any slightly less dodgy-looking Floridian backers? Or if slightly suspect they must be, ones whose former associates had not been pardoned from federal prison by her husband?

McNerney calls for estate tax exemption

D-Pleasanton, could exempt some farm and business owners from estate taxes.

McNerney told reporters Thursday that small businesses, farmers and ranchers pay more in estate taxes as property values in his 11th Congressional District continue to rise. The result, he said, is that many have to sell of pieces of their property, usually to real estate developers, to pay the tax bill.

"Most of them want to keep land in agriculture, and because of the estate tax they’re not able to do that," McNerney said.

The congressman’s proposal would exempt all inheritance valued at $3.5 million or less from the tax. Small businesses and family farms would be exempt for up to $8 million in value. Previously, the exemption limit was $2 million.

The exemption would have benefited third-generation Sunol rancher Tim Koopman, who had to pay $747,000 in taxes when he inherited the family’s 850-acre ranch from his father.

Adelaide hosts solar congress

The mayors are getting together, talking about how they've done it, learning from each other and taking these initiatives back home," she said.

"What we're aiming for is to get the per capita emissions down.

"In order to do that we must have a big transition to renewable energy so at the congress there will be a bit on the new technologies that are available, including solar thermal and geothermal plus pv (photovoltaics or solar panels).

"We will hear from cities that have long had programs in reducing emissions, like Copenhagen and even South Korean cities.

"It's easier if you start from scratch but older cities have to retrofit and learn from others that are doing it right."

Premier Mike Rann says SA is one of the leaders.

Drobo - storage from Lord of the Rings?

There's no actual mechanical robotics involved at all though. What we have is a mainboard in a small toaster-size black box. This contains an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC), firmware, a buffer, four e-SATA ports for four 3.5-inch disk drive slots, and a USB 2.0 port to connect to a PC, Windows or Mac, or server host.

There is no FireWire support and this may well not happen at all if faster USB comes along. Neither is there any Ethernet support. We might speculate that this could happen if Drobo expands its market into the small and medium enterprise (SME) area.

The drive slots can take any capacity 3.5-inch form factor SATA drive. The firmware provides a virtualised pool of storage which offers RAID-like functionality without RAID.

Ante up the cost of three or four kids and the sum gives new meaning to the term: mid life crisis.

There is no relief in sight for the next generation. With the outlay of a college education expected to increase at five percent a year, the average annual cost of a private college in 15 years is pegged at $51,664. Factor five percent a year to the already nose bleed cost of sending a child to Harvard, MIT, Boston College or Boston University, and you’re bracing for an annual expense of $90,000 by 2017.

"(Higher) education is at a crisis point, the result of uncontrolled cost increases over the past 20 years that have greatly exceeded the rate of inflation or annual consumer price indexes," the Houston Chronicle observes in an editorial. "Tuition forces parents to pull all-nighters, too," adds Paul Daugherty in the Cincinnati Enquirer.

General Search Blogging

Technorati rolled out its latest effort to fine tune its blog search service today, with a renewed focus on the blogger community and new ways to discover content, according to company CEO Richard Jalichandra.

"We are going back to service the bloggers," Jalichandra said, who took on the roles of president and CEO two months ago when founder David Sifry left the company. "There has been a lot of feedback from those who thought we lost our way with bloggers. We created Blogger Central, which is the first phase of putting all resources Technorati has for bloggers and the conversation about blogging in one channel." Blogger Central includes a river of posts about blogging and over time will include more tools for bloggers, such as for helping to monetize blogs, Jalichandra added.

Lombard astronaut longs for a sushi bar, Chicago-style pizza in space

If his astronaut gig doesn't work out, Lombard's Dan Tani said he can always get a job as a hot dog taster.

In a quirky interview Thursday based on questions submitted by Daily Herald readers, Tani relaxed a little bit and joked around about some of his experiences over the past three months in space.

Yes, he wants to get home.

His expected eight-week tour turned into a three-month stay with a hazy return date, and was marred by the tragic death of his mother, Rose.

Voters pass school expansion referendums in Unit 5

The kids at Washington, Lincoln, Oakland, Stevenson, Irving, . walked to school , atleast 90% . Now a large portion of kids are bused to unit 5 schools. Buses cost money !! . Build some new schools in a neighborhood where 90 percent of the kids could walk to school and if it is not diverse enough too bad. Try having a school board of members that make 30,000- 40,000 a year instead of 100,000 a year plus. These average income folks might have some fresh ideas on how to stretch a dollar because they have to everyday. Is there any problem unit 5 can solve without throwing money and consultants at it??? When they listed administrators in the paper this past year they left out about 1.5 million dollars a year of administrators and their salaries out of the paper. Each High school has 6 administrators.
