Grocer stew thickens

Aldi enters a Florida food market fighting to stabilize as Wal-Mart continues to challenge the traditional four big players and feisty natural/gourmet food retailers try to pick off more high-end shoppers.

Aldi most directly challenges Save-A-Lot, another limited-service, no-frills grocer owned by SuperValu Retail Inc., the nation's fifth-largest food retailer, that attracts less than 3 percent of bay area food dollars.

Expect only the basics at Aldi. There's no live lobster tank, or fresh seafood for that matter. There are packaged deli products, baked goods and meats, but no butcher or slicer for custom orders. The produce lineup is an old-school 50 items, so don't ask where they hid the star fruit.

While the 1,300 products (equal to the food selection at Costco) are one brand and usually come in one size, Aldi avoids the bulk volume sizes.

It's been a while since I've posted. School, work, play - you know, general life stuff that tends to get in the way. But rest assured that I AM going to make a concentrated effort to update this thing more often because there are a lot of really great things going on.

Like tonight: Daniel Johnston at Slowdown. It's gonna be real interesting, and good to boot. Eighteen bucks to see a legendary singer-songwriter. Plus, I haven't seen Flowers Forever yet, and I've heard mixed reviews...very anxious to decide for myself. On a very unrelated note, today I read an excellent article in the Jan. 28 New Yorker on the Obama/Clinton race. I'm not well versed in politics, and frankly, not terribly interested in them either. But this article made me think about the differences in ideology of the two candidates, which was really great.

CORNER CUBE MONDAY 2/25: Thoughts on Mayweather and Big Show press ...

Updated throughout the day from the corner cubicle, Torch columnist James Caldwell's weekday blog focuses on hot topic current events and other items of interest from around wrestling. Updated Monday, February 25 - Mayweather press conference. I've determined I'm never eating at Jack in the Box again after sitting through the same JitB commercial for 30 minutes waiting for WWE to stream the Mayweather press conference on their website. That aside, it's clear that Mayweather is the heel in the program against Big Show unless it's strictly a pro-De La Hoya and anti-Mayweather thing in Los Angeles. But, Mayweather is a natural heel, so I believe the best dynamic here is to keep Mayweather cocky and arrogant, while keeping Big Show tough and the aggressor. Even with Rey Mysterio by his side, Mayweather created his own heel wrestling persona at this press conference by flashing dollar bills and flaunting that he's got money, mansions, cars, and girls.

Robbie Keane joins the legends after 100th goal

In the Tottenham dressing room I pinned up a motto: "The Team is the Star". If any player sums up that philosophy, it’s Robbie Keane. Normally it’s not the best combination to have a striker as your skipper. Robbie is different. He’ll do any job a manager asks and seeks togetherness with teammates socially as well as on the pitch. Character-wise, if you had 11 Robbie Keanes on your side, you’d have a chance of winning any game.

Robbie doesn’t play the game for personal accolades but deserves any which come his way, and yesterday he reached 100 against Sunderland. Only two other players in the past 30 years have reached a century. Their identities, Teddy Sheringham and Glenn Hoddle, show how special it is. At Spurs, Robbie is appreciated, the fans regularly voting him player of the year, but I wonder whether in the country he gets the recognition he deserves.

200 protest tardiness penalty

Two hundred students at the John D. O'Bryant School of Mathematics and Science in Roxbury protested a crackdown on tardiness yesterday by blocking doors and hallways and preventing hundreds of other students from getting to class on time.

School officials locked down the school after the protest, banning people from entering and exiting and keeping students in the same classroom the last two periods of the day.

"The headmaster put the school in safe mode," said Jonathan Palumbo, a spokesman for the Boston school system. "Any issue going on in the hallway needs to be addressed quickly."

The protest was unusual at the school, which typically has a well-behaved student body of 1,300 and boasts test scores in math that are among the top in the state. Officials said two fights had broken out at the school earlier this year.
