TOWN OF NIAGARA: Puzzled by plaza plans
Town of Niagara residents will have their first chance Tuesday to ask questions about a 146,000-square-foot shopping plaza proposed for Military Road. The plaza, which will be anchored by a yet-to-be-announced national retailer, will be located on property owned by Benderson Development Co. across from the Fashion Outlets mall. Town board members will consider a request to rezone a portion of the land needed to move the project forward at their meeting Tuesday, but not before a public hearing is held. The hearing will begin at 7 p.m. inside Town Hall, 7105 Lockport Road.Supervisor Steven Richards said he's received a few calls from concerned residents since plans for the proposed "Military Place" plaza were unveiled by Benderson last month. However, he doesn't think there will be as much opposition as there's been for the Super Wal-Mart going in down the road. That project was been delayed for more than two years because of legal action brought forth by a group of residents concerned the store would have a negative and hazardous impact to the area."I think most of the residents' concerns (about Military Place) can be worked out," Richards said.
Slaughterhouse video prompts unprecedented beef recall
This undercover video of sick and crippled cows being brought to slaughter in an abattoir in southern California has prompted the largest recall of beef in US history, (writes Will Pavia). The US Department of Agriculture yesterday ordered that 143 million lb of beef from the slaughterhouse be recalled. Officials estimate that some 37 million lbs of the recalled meat had been heading to schools across America though they fear that most of it will have already been eaten. The abattoir run by the Hallmark Meat Packing Company, an associate and supplier of Westland Meat Company, which provides meat for America’s National School Lunch Programme, is now the subject of an an animal-abuse investigation. Ed Schafer, the US Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer said his department had evidence that Westland did not routinely contact its veterinarian when cattle lost the power to walk after passing inspection, violating health regulations.
Inside Politics
"This will come as a shock to throngs of delirious Democrats, but the winner of the party's nomination does not automatically become President. There will be — repeat, will be — a general election. And John McCain is already showing he is going to be one tough opponent," New York Daily News columnist Michael Goodwin writes. "With their party's huge primary turnouts and record-shattering contributions, many Dems act as though the survivor of the showdown between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama wins a cakewalk to the White House. There is talk of a landslide and big gains in Congress," Mr. Goodwin said. "The prevailing sentiment is not that the GOP is weak. It's that the GOP is dead. "McCain, the aging, craggy-faced warrior, begs to differ.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has given mixed signals about whether he will filibuster the resolution. Republican Sen. John Warner has offered his own resolution, which would garner significantly more Republican support. And Vice President Cheney made the vote count sound like a moot point. "It won't stop us,'' Cheney told CNN's Wolf Blitzer in a contentious interview Wednesday afternoon. "The Congress has control over the purse strings. They have the right, obviously, if they want, to cut off funding. But in terms of this effort, the president has made his decision.'' The matter is expected to come to a head on the Senate floor next week. With at least half a dozen Senators taking steps toward running for president, the vote is certain to have political consequences even if no one at the White House is listening.
First Look: Mini series follow-up: More RAM
Through Macworld's Peter Cohen, I was able to get a beta build for some basic comparison testing. The results were impressive, and I've been given the OK to share some basic results. JK2 includes a built-in benchmarking tool; this page at Inside Mac Games explains how to set it up, as it's far from obvious. I ran the benchmark on all three machines, at 1024x768 resolution with the default settings for all the other options, and EAX audio disabled. First, the non-Universal results: Intel Core Duo mini: 30fps PowerBook G4 1.33GHz: 52fps Dual G5: 112fps Even in Rosetta mode, JK2 runs quite well, scoring an average of 30fps. With that result, however, comes a caveat. I also recorded 30fps when testing in Rosetta at 800x600 and 640x480, which makes no sense whatsoever.
The Brat Race: In Diapers And on a Day-Care Wait List
For many young people and their families, enduring the wait list has become a rite of passage to gain admission to college, private school and even preschool. Now, children are being wait-listed even younger -- in utero. After Kate Ferry learned last summer she was pregnant, she and her husband put their unborn baby on a wait list for admission to a child-care center next fall. "It was a running joke, that we told the day-care center before we told anyone in the family" that she was pregnant, says the Downingtown, Pa., mother-to-be. As competition for good child care intensifies, parents in many regions are finding themselves on long wait lists, particularly for infant and toddler care; some are trying to nail down slots even before their babies are conceived. The trend poses a challenge for parents, who may not know how far to plan ahead and how to navigate the wait lists.
