SFGate: Daily Dish

"Desperate Housewives" star Teri Hatcher has spoken out about her unlikely friendship with former U.S. President George Bush, boasting she's even stayed at the statesman's Maine home.

Photos of the actress giving Bush a kiss on the cheek were splashed over newspapers last week, arousing huge curiosity.

But Hatcher explains she's been pals with the ex-president for years after voicing support for a number of his humanitarian campaigns.

She says, "He's wonderful to my family. I hope to be involved in many of his charities."

Phelps learns to love mornings

Before Michael Phelps even knew there was such a concept as early person/late person, he was the embodiment of a night owl.

His mother would try to wake him up - nicely, of course - for his dawn swim or his first class, and he would resist, silently, stubbornly, like almost any other teenager in captivity.

Phelps, who will turn 23 in June, is one of the most famous Olympians in the world, with six gold medals and two bronzes in his possession. He is turning his biorhythms upside down because he will be swimming finals in the middle of the morning in August, courtesy of the collaboration between the organizers of the Beijing Summer Games and NBC, the American broadcaster.

That's right, the nation that used to use sport to stimulate camaraderie between Chairman Mao speeches is now staging Olympic finals at the bizarre hour of 10 a.m.

Another day, another death

Or we can take a stand to change the conditions that make such violence, though not common, much too frequent.

Police and prosecutors have shown that after one of these horrible crimes is committed, they can find suspects, arrest them and ensure they are brought to justice. But our efforts at prevention — before the attack, when kids reveal problems in school, at home, in their neighborhoods — have been abysmal. If we're ever going to change the environment that permits such horrendous violence to take root, that's where we need to work.

Especially since the victims of that violence, and the suspects, seem to be growing younger with each incident. Most recently, 15-year-old Dominic Young was gunned down during a restaurant robbery in Norfolk. The suspects — ages 13, 14, 15 and 18 — were arrested this week.

Lions must ride it out with Rogers

It's also up to Marinelli and his staff to do their jobs, to push Rogers to do his. And if he doesn't stay in shape, shame on Big Baby. If he doesn't, you bench or fine him or otherwise punish him, and even then I don't see how the Lions are way worse for having given it another shot.

Remember last offseason? Remember the glee with which many welcomed cornerback Dre Bly's banishment to Denver? Hmm. How'd that work out?

I remember the refrain well. Bly was divisive and had to be moved and everyone knew it. So in return, all the Lions got were Tatum Bell and George Foster, both eventually benched. And the Lions' biggest weakness, their ultimate undoing after the 6-2 start, was their lack of competent cornerbacks. Shocker.

The Lions were so desperate to get rid of Bly, their leverage was nil and their options were limited.

Oh give me a home, where armed boys and mentors roam

The South Dakota House sang its own version of that song yesterday when members voted 41-28 to approve what is being referred to as the mentor bill.

And, indeed, there would be plenty of mentoring involved if HB1263 becomes law. At least, we hope there would be.

If you're going to send a 10-year-old kid afield with a loaded gun, it's a good idea to have some pretty intense adult supervision. 1263, which now heads for the Senate, is designed to provide that - while lowering the legal hunting age from 12 to 10.

The adult mentor would need to pass a firearms safety course before taking the kid out. And they could only hunt in small groups of six or less. The kid couldn't be banging away at antlered trophies, either. The law would provide a special license good only for anterless big-game animals.

Giants-Patriots Super Bowl the second most-watched TV show ever

The New York Giants' thrilling win over New England was the most-watched Super Bowl ever with 97.5 million viewers, a total that is second only to the "M-A-S-H" finale audience, Nielsen Media Research said Monday.

The game eclipsed the previous Super Bowl record of 94.08 million, set when Dallas defeated Pittsburgh in 1996. The final "M-A-S-H" episode, which drew 106 million viewers in 1983, is the only other show in American broadcast history watched by more people.

Sunday's game had almost all the ingredients Fox could have hoped for: a tight contest with an exciting finish involving a team that was attempting to make history as the NFL's first unbeaten team since 1972.

But the Giants ended New England's bid for perfection, 17-14. Throughout the game, the teams were never separated by more than a touchdown.
